How to cut plexiglass on a cnc router

Plexiglas can be cut into shapes or designs using computer numerical control routers. CNC routers allow users to design a template in CAD software, then upload the design to the router. This fully automates the cutting process, and works in much the same way as a laser engraving machine. The router bit follows the inputs of the CAD template, and the cut is controlled left-to-right, front to back and up-and-down

1
Install a single flute bit on the router. This bit should be designed for use on Plexiglas or plastics. Selecting the correct bit is the single most important step to ensure quality results.

2
Upload the template from your CAD program. Do this on some machines through a USB storage drive, and on others by simply opening the file on a connected computer and selecting to use that file. When designing a template for Plexiglas, use passes of no more than 1/4-inch deep to ensure a smooth edge with no cracking.

3
Align the Plexiglas sheet on the cnc router, then turn on the vacuum pump to secure it in place.

4
Switch on the cnc router and use the computer interface to tell it to begin cutting the Plexiglas. After it cuts it, turn off the router then the vacuum pump before attempting to remove the Plexiglas.
